Although there are basic digital cameras, there are also high end ones that would allow more creativity on the part of the photographer. Basic point and shoot cameras would perform quite well for people who are not too eager to adjust the settings. A basic digital camera would always be set on auto mode. In auto mode, the shooting environment would be assessed by the camera and adjust the settings as required. A notch higher than the basic ones, there are also models that have more creative zones.

Creative zones available in a digital camera would vary. The usual modes would include aperture priority and shutter speed priority. Aperture adjusts the opening where the light passes through. The shutter speed is used in manipulating motion in the shot. To freeze action, the digital camera has to have a high shutter speed. It should be at least 1/500 to make sure that no blurring would occur. On the other hand, if people still want to have some movement in the photo, the shutter speed can be slower. Such setting would be perfect for water landscapes. Mostly people struggle with available light. High shutter speeds will not be possible without strong light. At the same time, slow shutter speeds would only be possible with the use of a tripod.

Other modes available in a digital camera would be simpler to follow. Usually, the dial would have icons that are easy to understand. For instance, portrait mode would have a person icon. In this mode, the color of the skin is made lighter. The background is also kept in a blur to put emphasis on the subject. The landscape mode would make use of the widest angle possible. The contrast is also automatically adjusted and the color green is made more vivid. The night mode feature in a digital camera will not be as easy to use. One is a night portrait and the other is night landscape. Both would yield to better photos if a tripod is used. In the case of night portrait, the flash can also be fired. A digital camera with creative zones can still be set on auto. However, if the owner have no intention of using any of the modes from the creative zone, basic point and shoot cameras would be more practical. Those who still have difficulty in choosing between the two can consider other features. For example, there are s
ettings that turn a photo into black and white or a two-tone sepia. There are also color accent features that would allow the photographer to choose a hue that would stand out against a monochromatic scheme.

Many of the best lines that we use in every day life come from action movies. Some writer somewhere chose to write these great lines and then they make their way into the every day uses of people to get repeated over and over again. As we say them we fall into character of the person who coined them on the big screen.

How many times have you said Ill be back? Well most likely more times than Arnold Schwarzenegger did in the movie Terminator. We all try to do our best Arnold while we say it as well. And it is also mimicked on other television shows, the radio and even music.

Many other every day saying comes from the action movies of all time. The Godfather has many with the go the mattresses theme. And who can forget the line are you talking to me, that DeNiro made famous in Taxi Driver. And who cannot handle the truth? Apparently Tom Cruise cannot in the movie A Few Good Men.

Our sayings we pick up from action movies can be a way for us to express a comedic flair or it can also be a way of showing our tough side in a gentle manner. These saying incorporate themselves into our daily lives before we even realize it. Yippee Kayey mother was in Die Hard but now you hear it all over the place.

An action movie also gives us a chance for the bad guy to be blown away. Sure we would not do this in real life but it is nice to know that someone is getting what they deserve somewhere and our action heroes do it for us. It gives us a sense that righteousness is being done in the world even though it is make believe.

So keep on coining those phrases as the older ones live on. Many younger people do not know where the sayings come from but they know how to say them. So if they doubt that you can tell them, are you feeling lucky punk?

What makes the thrill of sci-fi movies so thrilling? What makes it possible for us to watch where no man has gone before with fascination? Maybe because the idea that the world is a bigger place than we can ever imagine, and things exist beyond our natural reality that is not in our everyday lives, is a concept that we really want to consider.

This is what makes these types of movies so popular. To imagine extra terrestrial life forms that either want to be our friends or such out all of our life force is fascinating. Watching them on the big screen is also a lot safer than fighting alien forces in real life. After all, we have enough worries just getting to work on time on most days let alone fighting off and alien predator.

It is also cool to think that no matter how far advance other species are our human nature kicks in and our love factor often wins in these movies. It can be our will to survive or to protect the ones we love that prevails and keeps our species going. It is the human struggle that is interesting and not just watching people get slaughtered.

This explains the popularity of District 9. The story is based on one man and learning that by becoming one of the creatures he so desperately tries to control becomes his life and seeing how the creatures live on the other side while his life is forever changed. This is the ultimate putting yourself in someone elses shoes theory and what drives us to watch it.

The technology in a sci-fi movie is also fascinating to us. What we only can dream of with a script can become reality with the right production company. It is amazing that a little tricorder can read every internal organ in our body. Or that people can read others minds just by looking at them.

As our imaginations work faster than our technology the sci-fi movie will remain popular. We can continue to look forward to the ingenious way that someone will concoct another world. But like in the every popular Avatar, no matter what world you are in it is about the heart and the human condition.

Tsotsi movie was released last 2006 and accurately describes the differences between life in Johannesburg, South Africa and the surrounding ghettos. And honest portrayal of survival and redemption, all the features of human nature are shown in a thought-stirring way. This movie is approximately 94 minutes long and is very violent and quite disturbing, especially in the first half.

Hood’s fictional film imitates a case study as it carefully tracks Tsotsi’s everyday life. Viewers are first shown the evil side of the character — he has a gory fistfight with a friend and an evenly aggressive and ruthless job as a full-time robber.

Recurrent use of flashbacks allows the viewer to have ideas and thoughts about Tsotsi’s childhood. Instead, the audience views his mother on her bed dying, her hand reaching out for her son. This heart-warming moment is ruin by gunfire as Tsotsi’s father shoots the family dog to stop it from barking.

The film concentrates on Tsotsi’s life, so its effectiveness depends on main character’s acting — fortunately, he acted so well. With frequent close-ups, the audience sees every mixed emotion and astonished facial expression on some scenes which involves the baby.

Because the actors’ facial expressions show a collective language, there’s slight dialogue in the film. Suspense scenes are created gently but successfully. When a homeless man in a wheelchair furies Tsotsi, he quietly follows the handicapped man from the subway station to an isolated area under a faintly lit highway. The audience is required to wait patiently for Tsotsi’s expected attack.

In spite the flashbacks and deserted scenes of suspense, the film flows well. Even the purist of the film’s strikes of social comments have a recurring sense of cinematography.

Since Tsotsi struggles to be reasonable, the movie is often identified as a bloody and violent. Compared to U. S. Films, the violence in this movie appears fast and detached. Hood’s documentary-style description of aggression shows an unconscious acceptance of it. When Tsotsi fires at the baby’s mother, the camera focuses less on the gun and more on the woman’s reaction.

But the blood does not overpower the movie’s great acting or deteriorates its difficult situations. Instead, the difference between right and wrong shapes until the viewer completely recognizes with the main character.

The Tsotsi movie gives an accurate depiction of life in extremely poor and rich parts of South Africa and what people do to survive in ghettos. Because of the in-depth plot, perfect depiction of life in South Africa, a total drama involved in the movie, is rated 4 out of 5. Best film one can ever see.

from Marcy Dermansky and Jurgen Fauth

It’s not all popcorn and free movies: the lives of film critics are fraught with danger. Sore backs, headaches, and loss of faith in cinema as an art form are only some of the risks we bravely face on a day to day basis—so you won’t have to. From the megaplex to the art house, the world of movies is a minefield, and this is our list of the most explosive dissapointments of the year.
1) Match Point
It feels as if Woody Allen isn’t even trying anymore. Scarlett Johansson is utterly wasted in this shoddily written and executed morality tale about unlikable posh Londoners and one homicidal, social climbing tennis pro. “Annie Hall” wasn’t just light years ahead of this mess, it was also shorter.

2) The Brothers Grimm
Oh Terry, what grim disillusionment. A third class theme park ride, much too dark for children, too familiar for adults, and too lame for either audience. Nobody who’s seen the Ents march on Isengard will be thrilled by your animatronic branches.

3) Sin City
We like a little story with our orgies of decapitation and wanton violence. Our lizard brains might enjoy these obvious, ripped-off noir-light tales of sex and blood, but what about the rest of our heads? Since there’s nothing else going on, the extremely stylish look is wasted. Miller and Rodriguez are threatening a sequel.

4) Brokeback Mountain
No, we’re not homophobic, but a quickie in a tent followed by years of lying, mumbling, and being mean to their wives and daughters did nothing to endear Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal’s simple-minded shepherds to us. Ang Lee’s artfulness can’t hide the basic emptiness of this story. A plodding disappointment, stretched out to marathon length and hyped beyond belief.

5) The Aristocrats
Potty humor is potty humor, no matter how many of your talented friends you line up to deliver the punch line. The only worthwhile joke belonged to Sarah Silverman, and she has her own movie.

6) 5×2
Francois Ozon tells the story of a disintegrating marriage, backwards. But by making the couple miserable examples of human beings, it’s impossible to give a damn. Ugh, times five.

7) The War of the Worlds
No, it’s not an independent or world film by any stretch of the imagination. But we can still feel the industrial-strength headaches this utterly superfluous blockbuster gave us, so it deserves getting dissed one last time. (Spielberg, by the way, more than regained our respect with the powerful drama “Munich.”)

 Reel Paradise
Nobody needed “reality cinema,” and we’d bet my friendly neighbor’s vacation video is more gripping than the Pearson family’s tale of running a movie theater in the Fiji islands.

9) Don’t Move
In this preposterously bad Italian art-house drama, Penelope Cruz falls passionately in love with her rapist. Making herself ugly to gain respect (a move cribbed from Charlize Theron), Cruz dons false teeth, tacky blue eye shadow and impossibly bad clothes to prove her depth as an actress.

10) Breakfast on Pluto
For an audience that has seen “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” “Velvet Goldmine,” and Neil Jordan’s own “Crying Game,” it takes more than transvestites, tacky magicians, and the IRA for a truly fresh experience. Cillian Murphy’s considerable charms couldn’t save this timid and predictable adaptation of Patrick McCabe’s novel.

For years, an uneasy relationship has been the norm between the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) and independent film producers. The latter complained of the state-owned broadcaster’s closed- door policy against them. ZBC has in its twenty years of existence not done much local entertainment production. Most of its programming has been, and is, foreign.

In November 1999, Daves Guzha, an actor and director of a Zimbabwean arts management company, Rooftop Promotions presented a television pilot project to the ZBC. After long negotiations with the ZBC board, the co-production of Waiters, a popular stage comedy began in October 2000. Zimbabwean viewers were finally able to watch a quality, locally-produced sitcom towards the end of last year. Why has it taken so long for the ZBC to enter into such co-productions? “Some people have attempted to do it before. They have been doing it the wrong way,” said Guzha. “You have to meet each other half way.” It would have cost Creative Native (Rooftop’s film unit) Z$4.6 million (US$84,000) to produce the set of six episodes of Waiters. But because ZBC brought in its equipment into the partnership, only Z$1,5 million (US$27,000) was pumped into the production. Under Creative Native’s agreement with ZBC, the state broadcaster assumes the territorial rights whilst the independent film producer retains a larger portion of the regional and international rights to the comedy. Creative Native also gets all the proceeds from the sale of the video which the company will produce initially for the Zimbabwean market. Directed by experienced British theatre and stage director Roy Barber, the sitcom is set in a café owned by three men of different races. The first five instalments, written by prolific playwright Steve Chifunyise, deal with the problems the three face in getting their restaurant licensed and establishing a customer base. Young actor Jasen Mpepho, is sure to win audiences with his infectious smile and lively conduct as the Mozambican chef. “It’s long overdue,” said Walter Mparutsa, a veteran of over twenty local and international feature films. Mparutsa is one of the many talented actors in the comedy. He believes Waiters will make a difference because people with the right skills have been used.

From Diana Saenger

The 1933 picture “King Kong” became not only one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed movies of all times, it saved the RKO studio from bankruptcy. Directors Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack’s vision to create a 50-foot monster that hoped to eat a five-foot tall beauty (Fay Wray) for breakfast, paid off. “King Kong” is the all-time classic, ranking 43 on the American Film Institute’s list of Top-100 American movies, and who can forget those images of King Kong atop the Empire State building fighting off the biplanes tiring to kill him.

Warner’s newly restored and digitally mastered 2-Disc Collector’s Edition also contains a copy of the original March 24, 1933 program for the screening of “King Kong” at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood and color cards of the original posters.

When Merian C. Cooper exposed his idea about King Kong to a possible backer, he probably held his breath that he wouldnt be shipped off to a lonely bin. Luckily that idea turned the film into a profit for RKO of $1.75 million and saved the studio.

The film is so amazing, that in 2005 Academy Award-winning director Peter Jackson , who admits “King Kong” has been his favorite movie of all time and inspired him to be a filmmaker, released his newest version of the incredible horror film. James A. Creelman and Ruth Rose (Ernest B. Schoedsack’s wife), original screenwriters of the 1933 film, could pat themselves on the back if they were still around (Creelman committed suicide in 1941), that their story has held up and is the basic plot of Jackson’s new film as well.

The story of documentary film producer Carl Denham (Robert Armstrong) who longed to take a ship to an undiscovered island and pit a beauty against a beast was not only a milestone for horror and fantasy fans, the humanistic aspect that a pretty blonde could tame a beast appealed, and looking at the 2005 box office receipts, still appeals, to movie fans across the board. The new Warner version begins with a melody from Max Steiner’s impressive soundtrack of the film, which you may be tempted to fast forward through, but should really listen to, because since the film has little dialogue and is mostly visual, it backs up those visuals impeccably.

Carl discovers Ann Darrow (Wray) only hours before he compels the captain of the Venture to set sail out of Manhattan quickly, as the several people looking for Carl are fast on his heels. At first Ann questioned Carl’s motives, but understanding that he wants to feature her in one of his movies with prehistoric animals, and the fact that she’s really down and out, she agrees.

Ann, the only woman aboard, is ignored by the ship’s Captain Englehorn (Frank Reicher) as he has too much to oversee. However, Ann’s beauty does not escape adventurer John “Jack” Driscoll (Bruce Cabot), who soon announces he’s in love with Ann. Driscoll is rumored to be modeled in personality and demeanor after filmmaker Ernest B. Schoedsack.

The romance is perfect for Carl, who has been chastised for the lack of romance in his pictures. Now he’ll have romance AND adventure.

The adventure starts almost immediately when the ship sails into the mist-covered Skull Island. The sound of the native drums is like an enticement of gold to Carl, who orders the crew to board the rowboats for shore. Once there the crew encounters a bunch of natives having a ceremony to present one of their island girls to the beast, Kong, as his bride. But once he sees Ann, the chief decides she will be a better offering and begins to banter with Englehorn about trading for her.

Now, one must admit it’s a far stretch that Englehorn would be able to understand this primitive language, especially since he never even knew about this island, but one goes along with it for the sake of the adventure.

The crew makes their way back to the boat agreeing to address the issue with the chief the next day. But during the night the islanders make a raid on the boat and kidnap Ann. By the time the men make their way on shore, Ann has been strung up by her wrists, gets her first look at Kong and let’s out her first blood-curdling scream as the towering beast tramps through the jungle towards her.

As Carl and the men hunt for Ann, they’re attacked by one kind of dinosaur after another. The animals kill some men, and although it’s obvious now that at times some scenes were filmed with the actors on a treadmill against a rear projection screen, the method worked back then to up the fright quotient.

Except for Jack and Carl, all the crew that went ashore is soon killed by historic creatures. Jack sends Carl back to the boat for help and more bombs they brought along, while he goes to look for Ann. She’s begging cuddled by Kong who treats her like his own little doll. He fights off other giant lizards and snakes about to eat her.

Underdog Entertainment, the award winning cross-media entertainment content producers announced at Sithengi that their first feature film Pressure will begin principle photography in February 2001.

A contemporary urban fairytale and character drama with startling touches of dark humour, Pressure explores issues of identity, sexuality and the boundaries of friendship. It’s the story of three friends whose lives are torn apart by a secret that they are determined to keep, no matter the cost. Underdog has been developing Pressure for over five years.

“It’s been a struggle to find financing for any feature film over the last few years in South Africa. The local film industry has been in a depressed state for some time. Now we’re happy to announce that Pressure will finally come to fruition,” says Pressure producer Marc Schwinges. “While we have sufficient financing to shoot Pressure we still hope to pick up further completion financing here at Sithengi. It may well be the last chance for other partners to get on board this project before it is completed, as we still own all equity,” adds Schwinges.

Another factor that has made the production of Pressure is the possibility to shoot on cheaper digital formats and then transfer these projects to film for theatrical distribution. “The growing acceptance of digital filmmaking on the global stage ties in with my own desire to work in the digital realm with Pressure. The format has an immediacy and grittiness to it that will serve the project well. Working on a digital format isn’t a compromise – it’s a stylistic and creative opportunity” says Luiz DeBarros, director of Pressure (and Underdog’s Head of Development).

This is borne out by Underdog’s latest documentary Metamorphosis: The Remarkable Journey of Granny Lee, (filmed entirely on digital formats), being awarded a Silver for cinematography at the recent South African Society of Cinematographer’s Visible Spectrum Awards 2000.

Africa Film & TV conducted an interview with Richard Elliot Hammer, Consulting Producer for the African Broadcast Network. Passions is a new soap being introduced to African audiences in Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, with the launch of the African Broadcast Network (ABN) on 29 January 2001. Passions is produced by NBC Studios in association with Outpost Farm Productions, Inc. The executive producer of the series is Lisa Hesser and James E. Reilly is Passions’ creator and head writer.

Can you tell me more about your new soap Passions? What is it about?

Absolutely. With pleasure. I’m rather passionate about Passions. Passions follows the dramatic lives of four families: the Cranes, the Russells, the Bennetts and the Lopez-Fitzgeralds. They reside in a quaint, charming, town called Harmony…a strange name for a place where life is anything but harmonious. The reason for this discord is that the townspeople of Harmony harbour secrets – secrets of all kinds….secret pasts. secret fears, secret fantasies…and, of course…secret passions. There is one very powerful secret however, that provides the undercurrent for all of the nasty, evil-doings in Harmony….a secret that threatens to destroy not only all of Harmony’s residents, but the town of Harmony itself!! This secret belongs to Tabitha Lenox. On the outside Tabitha is a sweet, somewhat eccentric, harmless old lady. In truth, sweet little Tabitha is a 300 year old witch – a witch with a vendetta against Harmony and all its residents.

Do you think viewers will enjoy Passions? Why?

I believe that viewers will love Passions and be very quick to embrace this soap …even those viewers who are not traditionally soap viewers. Historically, the most successful soaps have been those whose storylines focus on some very basic themes. Love, hate, desire, disappointment, bitterness, envy, conflict, compassion… these emotions are the threads that run through each of our lives and are familiar to all of us. In this aspect, Passions will not disappoint. A strong core family is also essential to a successful soap. In Egoli for example, it’s the powerful and wealthy Vorsters who have fuelled that show’s storylines for many years. The Bold and the Beautiful has the Forresters. Days of our Lives has the Brady family. In Passions we have the Cranes. It is important to mention here that Passions is the creation of James Reilly. Mr. Reilly was headwriter for Days of our Lives during the mid-nineties and it was he who brought the titillating mix of Gothic story and contemporary appeal to that show, blending them with those never-ending romantic triangles that are a staple of soap storytelling. The results were phenomenal. With storylines that included heroines being buried alive and possessed by the devil, Days skyrocketed to the top of the daytime ratings in the U.S. (Here in South Africa as well…who doesn’t watch Days?) James Reilly has infused his newest creation, Pas
sions with all the elements that have made Days an across-the-board smash success throughout the world. With that said, I’m not going to give away any more “secrets” regarding Passions” storyline. All I can say is that viewers should fasten their seat belts cause they’re in for one heck of an emotional roller-coaster ride!

Is Passions a local soap?

From the outset viewers will see that James Reilly created Passions for an international audience. The Passions crew travelled to Paris to shoot scenes on location that appear in the first twenty or so episodes. (The Passions crew shoots a very high ratio of its scenes outdoors in various locales.) In terms of storyline, for any soap to be a success on an international scale it must have a strong element of romance. Romance is the international language and Passions speaks this language…over and over again.

How long does the series run for?

Passions premiered in the U.S. in July 1999 and airs on NBC in a one-hour format. The series is doing extremely well and I expect it will be running for a long time to come. ABN has made an initial purchase of the first 260 hours of the series, which will be broadcast in its entirety in a specially edited 30-minute version to fit its half-hour time slot. That translates into 520 half-hours initially.

What is your target market?

Passions is unique in that it has a broad-based appeal that spans numerous demographics, including age, ethnicity and economics. Reflecting back to the four core families that form the backbone of the storylines-we have the Cranes who are “the super rich,” the Bennetts and Russells who are more middle class and the Lopez-Fitzgeralds who are more working class. They all have teenage children or children in their twenties, which accounts for the strong teen-based storylines that offer great appeal to younger viewers. Yet the storylines featuring characters in their thirties, forties and up are very strong and equally as riveting. The other unique aspect of Passions is its prominent multiethnic, multiracial make-up. All the core families (two white, one black, one of Latin origin) have front burner storylines that interweave on a daily basis. And all of their storylines are aspirational. By way of example, the Russells are one of Harmony’s prominent black families. T.C. Russell is a high school tennis coach. His wife, Eve, is a doctor, and they have two teenage daughters – Whitney, an Olympic games hopeful and her younger sister, boy-crazy Simone. The Lopez-Fitzgeralds are a mix of Irish and Latin. The eldest son, Luis, is a policeman in Harmony. His younger brother, Miguel is a student who is saving up for college. And sister Teresa. Well, she’s the dreamer. The problem with Teresa is that she dreams…and dreams…and dreams. And all of her dreams and schemes land her in some of the most hilariously funny predicaments.

Which brings me to Passions other forte… humour. Passions has moments of sheer madness and pure delight. James Reilly has created characters so multi-dimensional in scope and broad in emotional range that not even evil Tabitha is unredeemingly “bad.” In fact, many of the scenes involving this character are among the show’s most hilarious. Credit here must also go to Emmy award winning actress Juliet Mills, who infuses the character of Tabitha Lenox with a perfect balance of malevolence and good spirited fun. I would like to make mention here that all of the cast is equally as marvellous….and they are matched every step of the way by a superb writing team (several of them Days of our Lives graduates) and a production team that cranks out a first rate show – five days a weeks. There you have it. A new soap for Africa that has something for everyone and enough romance, mystery, suspense, humor and “passion” to keep viewers on the edge of their seats for a long time to come.

How will Passions compare with Isidingo? Can you give me your comments and opinions on both?

Isidingo is remarkable. I have tremendous admiration for the series because it is so very brave in its presentation of sensitive themes such as HIV and rape. This is story-telling with a sometimes “unpretty” message that is sensitively written, sensitively portrayed, extremely well-acted and presented in a way that thoroughly “entertains” its audience while simultaneously empowering them. I’ve never seen anything like it and I watch the series as often as I can. Isidingo is, of course, more focused towards a local audience. Passions is more international in scope and highly aspirational.
